Karygiannis works with the Filipino Community to address the Washi Typhoon calamity

Saturday 24th December 2011.

I have personally been affected by Mother Nature’s anger - as a young child of six years of age, I survived a flood which almost killed members of my family. As a child of ten, I had to leap out a window to escape an earthquake.

As the Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt, I represent one of the most ethnically diverse ridings in Canada. My constituents, no matter their number, are always affected by natural or man-made disasters. That is why I have traveled to many countries in the aftermath of these calamities.

My prayers and thoughts are with the people of Philippines and their families as they are overcoming this catastrophic typhoon. I hope God gives them the strength they need in this battle of man against nature. As we all know, thousands of innocent people were affected as a result of this typhoon. I was born in Greece, a country that experiences many natural catastrophes and, I have personally experienced the tragedy of one. I am now asking all Canadians to reach to out to our fellow Canadians from the devastated region in their time of need.
